On December 9, 2010 Dr. Tom Graboys gave a talk at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as part of their quarterly conference series. During his talk he discussed his perspective on the current state of the doctor-patient relationship.
At the request of Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Graboys contributed a chapter on cardiac arrhythmias to a recently published book titled, Integrative Cardiology. Dr. Weil is an American author and physician, best known for establishing and popularizing the field of integrative medicine.
Dr. Barbara Roberts, Director of the Womens Cardiac Center at the Miriam Hospital and LCRF Board Member, was interviewed by Providence Business News on November 29, 2010 where she discussed the importance of prevention in the fight against heart disease.
A portrait of Dr. Lown - painted by Stephen Coit - was unveiled at the Lown Scholars Program and Lown Visiting Professorship launch event on November 5 at the Harvard School of Public Health. The portrait was presented to Dean Frenk by Dr. Saini and Nassib Chamoun, Chairman of the Foundations Board of Directors.
Benn Grover, Editor of ProCor, participated in the United Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institutes Chronic Disease Centers of Excellence semi-annual steering committee meeting in Washington DC on October 7-8, 2010.
During the month of October, Dr. Saini was a guest lecturer at the Cambridge Senior Center and the Weston Council on Aging, where he discussed stress and the heart, and second opinions.
In September, Dr. Tom Graboys was interviewed by Joan Brunwasser from OpEdNews where he discussed his memoir, Life in the Balance, and spoke about his personal journey from cardiologist to patient with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. LCRF Board Member, Dr. Barbara Roberts participated in the first annual conference of the Women's Health Council of Rhode Island on October 14. The topic was violence against women as a risk factor for chronic disease.

The Foundation welcomed two interns during the Fall. Sandy Burkhardt received a BA in Integrative Public Relations and Interpersonal and Public Communication from Central Michigan Univeristy. Currently pursuing her MA in Health Communication at Emerson College, Sandy also works in an assisted living home as an activities assistant.
Anna Shum received her BA in English from Colby College, and is currently pursuing her MA in Health Communication at Emerson College. Anna is certified in both kettlebells and Z-health, a neuro-muscular training protocol. She teaches an exercise class that combines these practices and aims to redefine the workout.
Dr. Fred Mamuya was a guest speaker at the Woburn Senior Center on August 25, where he discussed second opinions and alternatives to surgery.
On August 29, Dr. Vikas Saini presented an abstract titled “Twelve year all-cause mortality with optimal medical management of chronic CAD” at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. The ESC Congress is currently the largest international cardiovascular meeting in the world.
Dr. Fred Mamuya was the keynote speaker at the Healthy Living Expo on May 4, 2010 in Hyannis, MA. The topic of his presentation was “Your heart, your health.”
Dr. Charles Blatt addressed the NewBridge on the Charles community on May 19, 2010 in Dedham, MA. The topic of his presentation was "Bypassing the bypass: The overuse of coronary bypass surgery in America."
Dr. Tom Graboys and his wife Vicki discussed his memoir, Life in the Balance, at the Ogden Surgical-Medical Societys 65th Annual Medical Conference in May in Ogden, Utah. Dr. Graboys and his daughter, Dr. Sarah Graboys Valeo were guest speakers on June 24, 2010 at Chestnut Parks Summer Author Series in Brighton, MA, where he discussed his book and his experience as a patient.
Dr. Brian Bilchik, ProCor director, and Benn Grover, ProCor editor, attended the 8th Annual National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in April 2010. The two-day conference, “Creating the Will for A Heart Healthy and Stroke Free Society” took place in Washington, DC. Dr. Bilchik facilitated the session, “Organizing Global Initiatives to Improve Education and Training in CVD Prevention.”
The Bernard Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching at Brigham and Womens Hospital was awarded to Dr. Tracey Milligan at the Harvard Medical School Teaching Awards Celebration on May 10, 2010. Since joining the neurology faculty at BWH, Dr. Milligan has taken on diverse teaching and leadership roles in education. Dr. Milligan is a well known and highly regarded teacher and lecturer, which nominees attributed to both her brilliance and her interactive, approachable style.
Dr. Charles Blatt was nominated for the 2010 Harvard Medical School Charles McCabe Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Years III & IV). The prize is one of the Schools most important commendations for outstanding teaching accomplishments.
The Bernard Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching at Brigham and Womens Hospital was established in January 2010 to celebrate physicians who are outstanding clinical teachers. The award will be given anually at the Harvard Medical School Teaching Awards Celebration. Awardees are selected based on nominations from their students and colleagues.
Lown Foundation Board member, Dr. Barbara Roberts, presented “Gender Specific Aspects of Heart Disease: What All Women Need to Know” at the University of Rhode Island on March 18, 2010.
Dr. Bernard Lown hosted the first in a series of lectures via Skype on January 28, 2010. The “Ariel Conversation” took place with young International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) activists in Agra, India.
Dr. Fred Mamuya co-authored "Direct comparison of rest and adenosine stress myocardial perfusion CT with rest and stress SPECT," published in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology (2010; 17:27-37).
After five years as ProCor's Editor in Chief, Catherine Coleman has left the Lown Foundation to lead the Health Communication Core at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. We are pleased that she will continue as Editor of the Lown Forum and thank her for her many contributions to ProCor's global CVD prevention efforts.
The Lown Foundation welcomed Benn Grover as ProCor's new Editor in February 2010. Benn is a communications professional whose career has consistently focused on creating tailored health education and prevention campaigns that promote behavior change at the individual and community levels. He has worked with diverse populations throughout the United States and globally. Benn received a Masters Degree in Health Communication in 2007 at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Charles Blatt presented "Anxiety is a Major Clinical Predictor of Long-term All-cause Mortality in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease," on March 3rd at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention Scientific Sessions 2010 in San Francisco, California.
Dr. Vikas Saini delivered a free health lecture at the Watertown Mall on February 5, 2010. During the past several months he has also addressed the Brookline Rotary Club, Newton Senior Center, and Evans Park at Newton Corner, discussing topics such as nutrition and second opinions in cardiovascular care.
